How to Make Cold Brew in a Mason Jar

A mason jar is perfect for making cold brew. Not only does the jar seal well, it makes a great conversation piece as it sits on the counter for several hours.

Here's what to do:

  1. Grind the beans right before you start brewing. You want to use a coarse grind size. The grounds should resemble very coarse salt.
  2. Measure out the coffee. You want to use a ratio of 10 grams of ground coffee for every 100 grams (milliliters) of water.
  3. Place the measured coffee grounds in the bottom of the mason jar and cover with room temperature water.
  4. After five minutes, use the back of a spoon to push down any grounds that have formed a crust on top.
  5. Seal the mason jar and place it in a cool location out of direct sunlight for twelve to fifteen hours.
  6. Cover a bowl or second mason jar with a piece of cheesecloth. Unseal the brewing jar and slowly filter out the grinds. Warning: We tried sealing the mason jar with a coffee filter and it took forever. Don’t do that.

Pour and enjoy!
