Coffee Brewing: Pour-Over vs Automatic Drip

Explore the pros and cons of pour-over vs. automatic drip brewing, and discover how to elevate your morning ritual with the method that suits you best.

Coffee Brewing: Pour-Over vs Automatic Drip

I love brewing with my Hario V60 manual pour-over. It takes me about 5 minutes from whole bean to first delicious sip, and it remains my precious ritual each morning before I take on the world.
Pour-over brewing is considered by many coffee enthusiasts, including myself, to be the superior method for brewing a delicious cup of coffee. It’s easy, fun, and allows for a lot of customization. Admittedly, this method requires a bit of math, but I keep it simple for my first cup of the day (15:1 water-to-coffee ratio). This is slightly off the 17:1 ratio I use when the brain fog of morning has lifted.

On the other hand, when I have guests staying with me or I need to brew multiple cups, I struggle with putting on my “high-volume" barista hat so early. The simplicity of an automatic drip machine and its ability to accommodate multiple coffee drinkers is difficult to beat. My Bonavita 8-cup brewer has saved me on multiple occasions. I love that it has a pre-infusion option and a quality spray head. While there are cheaper versions on the internet, I really think you get what you pay for in this instance. Mr. Coffee, Iʻm looking at you… with disappointment in my eyes.

Brew method: Pour over

One of the main advantages of manual pour-over brewing is the control it provides over the brewing process. With a manual pour-over, you have complete control over the water flow, temperature, grind size, and ratios. This all leads to a fine-tuned extraction of flavor and aromas. Getting the most out of your coffee is essential for our freshly roasted single origins. These coffees have been farmed with love, meticulously roasted, and expeditiously shipped. You might as well get the most out of them and see what all the fuss is about.

Brew method: Automatic drip

While drip machines can be a more convenient option for some people, they often lack the precision and control that manual pour-over brewing offers. Some lesser-quality drip machines tend to have a one-size-fits-all approach to brewing, which can result in a less flavorful and aromatic cup of coffee.

Enhance your coffee experience

Pour-over brewing allows for a more intimate and personal experience with your coffee. This manual pour-over process requires you to pay slightly more attention to it, but the reward is exponential. Some people appreciate this, others don’t. I get it. Weʻre all on our own coffee journey, and it’s okay wherever we are within it. My goal is simply to enhance your coffee experience and give you some options to play with. Happy Brewing!
