Looking Up Again: No-Tech Wednesdays at Tradition Coffee Roasters

Can you imagine life without your phone? Before the age of constant connection, your neighborhood was your internet. This week, our co-founder, Brian, shares a story about growing up in Queens and why Tradition Coffee Roasters is inviting you to put your phone down and "look up" every Wednesday to rediscover the simple muscle of human connection.

Looking Up Again: No-Tech Wednesdays at Tradition Coffee Roasters

Can you imagine life without your phone? For some, that sounds relaxing; for others, it sounds boring, lonely, or even a little scary. Before we dive into that, let’s take a quick walk down memory lane.

When the Neighborhood Was the Internet

I grew up in Queens, New York, when technology wasn’t at our fingertips. Eventually, pagers (or "beepers") arrived. We got creative with numbers: 01134 meant “hello” (upside down) and 143 meant “I love you.” It felt like the future, yet life still mostly happened face-to-face.

Back then, your parents didn't track you with apps; the neighborhood did. I remember riding my bike on my block with a couple of friends who enjoyed pushing boundaries just as much as I did. The rule was simple: don’t leave the block. But we did. We rode to a local park, built bike jumps, and created the kind of harmless mischief kids have been making forever.

I eventually made it back for dinner right on time. My parents seemed none the wiser. Toward the end of the meal, though, the mood shifted. My mom casually asked why I hadn’t been on the block that afternoon.

I was startled. How could she possibly know? It turns out someone at the local barbershop had seen me. No GPS, just people paying attention to one another. Being grounded back then meant being alone with nothing but your thoughts... no phones, no internet, just you.

The Muscle We’ve Stopped Using

Today, we interact in person less than ever. The moment a "feather of boredom" appears, we instinctively reach for our phones to regain control. Our connections can feel like a tree with a heavy top but shallow roots, impressive from afar, but easily knocked over.

We’ve also weakened the "muscle" of simple interaction: saying hello to a stranger or sparking a conversation that might fall flat. Like any muscle, if we don’t use it, it gets weaker.

A Small Experiment

At Tradition Coffee Roasters, we’re lucky to be a community hub for locals, travelers, and students alike. Recently, our lead barista, Sarah, had a simple idea: What if, on Wednesdays, we encouraged people to put their phones down for a little while?

It isn’t a rule; it’s an invitation. The internet is still here if you need to work, but if you’re open to it, Wednesday is a moment to look up. We’ll put out playing cards and games, but the real goal is conversation.

  • Maybe you introduce yourself to the person at the next table.
  • Maybe you chat with the regular you’ve seen a dozen times but never spoken to.
  • Or maybe you simply sit with your thoughts for a few minutes without reaching for your phone.

Practice Makes Connection

For those who remember life before smartphones, this might feel familiar. For younger generations, it might feel unusual at first. But connection isn’t something we download; it’s something we practice. Sometimes, it just takes one person willing to say hello.

So, here’s the invitation: Hi, I’m Brian. If you see me at the roastery, feel free to say hello. On Wednesdays, you might notice a few more people looking up instead of down. You might meet someone new, or you might just enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Either way, you’re welcome here.

Wednesdays are a pretty good day to start.
